Dr. Yang JianLi I Know

David XIia

It was about 10 years ago that I had an opportunity to fortunately know Dr. Jianli Yang and his wife, Dr. Christina Fu. Prior to that, we did not know each other. I was then a master student of computer science at Utah State University, and tried to solidify the fund to attend a technology conference held in Boston. My graduate school could only pay the airfares, but I still needed to pay for my lodging. To make a budget trip, I used a Christian church directory to make a cold call to a local church in Boston area, asking if someone could provide me a free stay during the conference period. Fortunately, It was Jianli and Christina who warmly welcomed and hosted me, a poor Chinese student who was a stranger to the couple. They took excellent care of me while I was staying in their house for the whole conference. I still remember that although the conference was just okay, I had wonderful time during the time with Yangs. In addition to providing me with delicious food and comfortable sleep, Jianli spent time with me chatting, let me browsing his great library collection, gave me convenient rides, took me to sight-seeing, and took me to a Chinese restaurant to have a wonderful authentic meal. All of these, they did from their loving hearts and it is all free to me.

The most memorable time I had from that trip were those talks I had privilege had with Jianli during the nights of my stay at Young's family. Our topics included life, school, future, democracy, freedom, faith, hometown, family, and of course, our motherland - China, we both love her deeply. I was deeply touched by Jianli's wholeheartedness, straightforwardness, candidness, integrity, wisdom, generosity, great passion for his country fellowmen and motherland. He is a good man, a caring husband, a graceful father, a true friend. It has been one and half years since Dr. Yang's detention in April last year, his basic right to meet his wife, children, or even his 90-year old father has been deprived. This serious violation of basic human rights should be strongly accused by everyone who loves his or her motherland, peace, freedom, and has a sense of justice and conscientiousness. Dr. Yang's case deserves the concern and support from everyone who values human-being.

Time flies. It has been ten years since I last time met Dr. Yang. Afterwards, I have gone through graduation, start to work, and have kids in family. We have moved to Utah, and later to Portland, OR/Vancouver, WA area. Like everyone else, it's been busy during the years. I felt a bit guilty that we only had a few exchanges on Christmas cards and greeting calls during the period. However, what Jianli and Christina had done for me is just like as if it happened today.

In supporting the effort to release Dr. Yang, I have voluntarily and decide to participate the effort. In the following, I'd like to share some of my personal experience in contacting US law makers and government officials.

Recently, I have several opportunities to contact my district US Congressman Brian Baird (D-WA) and his legal and foreign policy advisor Mr. Ivan Kaplan both in their DC offices. Initially, I had left messages for Mr. Baird via his administrative assistant, and Mr. Kaplan's voice mail, urging to sign on the lobbying letters. A week later, I didn't get call back from Mr. Kaplan. I called again and left another message for Mr. Kaplan asking for returning my phone call. Shortly on the same day, Mr. Kaplan returned my call. We had very good conversation. He started out by apologizing for not returning my call promptly. He explained that they were very busy on other bills in the house lately. He then showed curious and interest to know about the case of Dr. Yang. I went on to share what I know about the case and my personal experience with Jianli. Mr. Kaplan told me that he and Mr. Baird would be taking the stand to support release Dr. Yang. He even mentioned that whether they should send a separate letter or attach Mr. Baird's signature separately. He did give me his direct phone number at his DC office, and asked me to call him if I need any help on the case in the future. I told him I will do so. That's encouraging. I encourage any of you who would like to contact your congressman about the case, you may call congressmen's office asking for talking to his/her legal and foreign policy advisor. I am confident that you will able to talk to the person you want to talk to, and they will listen, and will act if they say so.

At another occasion, I had an opportunity to talk to my congressman's office, and was referred to talk to the president's comment line at 202-456-1111. I thought it is very likely to be a voice mail. I went ahead and called. Surprisingly, it was very easy to connect to a nice lady who was patient and listen to my whole story about Jianli's case. After our conversation, she even suggested me to fax the same story and letters to the President's fax line at 202-456-2461, which I did. Similarly, I would strongly encourage any one who likes his/her voice be heard, to call the comment line and share your opinion.

Let's continuously pray and work together and do our best to support the effort to release Dr. Yang.

Thank you,

David Xia
