An Appeal to Friends of Dr. Yang JianliNancy Pronovost To Friends of Dr. Yang Jianli: I am writing to you on behalf of the Yang family: Jianli, Christina and their children Anita and Aaron. As many of you know Dr. Yang Jianli has been illegally detained in China for more than two years. During this time his wife Christina continues to work steadfastly for his release. In May of 2004, after a quick trial and an unlawfully delayed verdict, the PRC sentenced Jianli to five years in prison. Since his sentence includes time already served, this makes Jianli eligible for parole as early as this October. However without pressure from the U.S. government it is unlikely he will be released this year. Christina and her family need our help to write (preferably FAX) our Senators and Representatives asking them to support an initiative requesting Jianli’s timely parole. Representatives Barney Frank and Christopher Cox are gathering congressional signatures on a letter to Chinese President Hu Jintao and Senators Barbara Mikulski and Jon Kyl are doing the same in the Senate. They need residents to appeal to their local legislatures to sign these letters as soon as you can or before September 7, 2004. If you are willing to help out, please do the following: 1) Print out and FAX signed sample constituency letters (Attachment 1) to your own Senators and to Senator John Kerry (even for people who live outside Massachusetts). The FAX number for Senator Kerry is 202-224-8525. Please include your address and phone number. 2) Print out and FAX signed sample constituency letters (Attachment 2) to your Representatives. Please include your address and phone number. 3) Forward this email and attachments to friends and relatives and ask them to do the same.
