JIANLI YANG DETAINED - URGENT APPEAL FOR HELP FROM CHINESE COMMUNITIES----By Yang Jianli's Old Schoolmates from Beijing Normal University We are very shocked to hear the news that Chairman of The Foundation for China in the 21st Century, Dr. Jianli Yang, was detained in Kunmin, Yunnan, China on April 27, 2002. Dr. Yang was our schoolmate as well as colleague at Beijing Normal University. During the short years at school, he was quickly recognized and respected by all of his professors and peers for his remarkable talent and outstanding achievements. As a result of these, he was admitted at the University of California at Berkeley, and obtained his Ph. D. in mathematics in a very short time period. For many years, Dr. Jianli Yang has been pursuing his political ideals in a persistent and tireless manner. He has established The Foundation for China in the 21st Century. He has organized forums involving professionals and scholars from China and around the world, discussing topics such as the Chinese Constitution, party politics, election in rural areas, relationships between various ethnic groups, economic globalization, and educational reform. It is time for China to prosper in this 21st century. We recognize that we may have different backgrounds, experiences, and points of view, but we all believe in the common goal of a strong, developed China. As the posterity of Emperors Yan and Huang, we strongly look forward to eliminating poverty and under-development, and moving forward with prosperity and well-being for all Chinese. We sincerely hope our families to be happier, our country to be more powerful, and our society to be more advanced. It is based on this patriotic enthusiasm that Jianli fights for his dream. Jianli has always been a gentleman. He was a model boyfriend during school times, then has been a model husband to Ms. Xiang Fu (who also was our schoolmate), and now is a model father of two lovely children - Zijian and Zixiang. Jianli gives his deep, unconditional love to his wife and children, and also to his friends, his community, and the land and people who nurtured him. The wife is anxiously waiting for her husband, and the children are anxiously expecting their father's safe and expeditious return. As Jianli's schoolmates and colleagues, and friends of his family, we join our voices to that of our Chinese friends from all walks of life, and appeal to the Chinese government to resolve this issue appropriately, and allow Jianli to unite with his family as soon as possible.
