Dear Friends,

Dr. Yang Jianli's closed trial is now scheduled for Monday August 4, 2003, at 9 am in Beijing. Between now and then, we are ratcheting up the public and political pressure and would appreciate any additional help that you can provide. Specifically:

1) The U.S. Government is expected to formally request to observe the trial.
2) Key Members of Congress are writing to President Hu.
3) The U.S. Senate will hopefully take up S.Res. 184 calling for Dr. Yang's release - last Wednesday, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee passed the Resolution.
4) Public pressure is being escalated (e.g., see Opinion-Editorial published in Saturday's International Herald Tribune).
