Dear Friends,

We are absolutely delighted to announce that this evening, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed Senate Resolution 184, calling for Dr. Yang Jianli's release. This follows on the wake the U.S. House unanimously passing a companion resolution only a month ago in a roll call vote of 412-0.

The passage of this resolution at this time is particularly helpful because Dr. Yang Jianli is scheduled to be tried for charges of espionage and illegal entry next Monday August 4, 2003, in the Number 2 Intermediate Court.

Special thanks is due to Senator Jon Kyl (Staff: Christy Clark and Dan Fata) and Senator Barbara Mikulski (Staff: Frederic Baron) who did exceptional work to guide this Resolution through to passage so quickly. Of course, thanks is also due to co-sponsors Senators Sam Brownback, John McCain, George Allen, and Rick Santorum.
