Dear President Bush:

I am writing to express my deep concern about the unjust detention of Dr. Yang Jianli in China since April of 2002. Dr. Yang was put on trial, in a closed-door session, on August 4, 2003 in Beijing, and is now awaiting the verdict. At this critical moment, therefore, I am writing to you to request your crucial intervention in the possible conviction and imprisonment of Dr. Yang.

I understand that Dr. Condoleezza Rice has repeatedly expressed her concern about the detention of Dr. Yang and has been keeping his supporters informed of the high level contacts made by the U.S. Government with the Chinese officials regarding Dr. Yang's case. As you know, both the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives have passed resolutions calling for his immediate and unconditional release.

I, and other supporters of Dr. Yang, would also like to help foster a positive relationship between the U.S. and the People’s Republic of China, but Dr. Yang’s unjust detention is a significant roadblock to this endeavor -- and it is interfering with China’s own efforts to be respected as a world power.

In light of the above, Mr. President, I urgently request that you personally raise the case of Dr. Yang’s unjust detention in your upcoming meetings next month with the Government of China.

Thank you for your kind assistance in this matter and for your strong commitment to protect human rights, both here and abroad.

Respectfully,
