Statement From Tiananmen Student Movement Leader Li LuLi Lu Dear Friends, "I've known Jianli Yang for almost 13 years and have always been a great admirer of him and his accomplishments. He is the only dissident I know, or for that matter the only person I know, who has two PhDs from two leading American universities--Berkeley and Harvard. But more importantly, he is a man of tremendous commitment and courage. Most of the people who were involved in the democracy movement with Jianli 13 years ago are today doing something else entirely. Some of them have achieved considerable success and reaped great personal benefit. Yet, as far as I know, Jianli has never lost his focus on the democratic movement even for a short period of time, and he has devoted his extraordinary talents to the advancement of the Movement over the last 13 years. His writings and the various research projects he helped to establish will profoundly contribute to and influence the democratic process in China for years to come. It is bad enough that Jianli was arrested for merely exercising his right as a Chinese citizen to return home and help unemployed workers--his fellow countrymen--to regain their lawful rights from corrupt officials. It would be inexcusably tragic for him to languish in Chinese prison during his most productive years. It would be tragic for his devoted wife Christina Fu, his two lovely sons (9) and (7), his many admirers and friends like myself, and ultimately for China as well. For it is only though people like Jianli Yang, with their devotion to their beloved country and their learned minds from years of training and study, that we can hope for a peaceful and stable transition in China."
