Letter from Congresswoman Constance Morella to Chinese Ambassador

Constance Morella

June 27, 2002

The Honorable Yang Jiechi
Chinese Ambassador to the United States
Embassy of the People’s Republic of China
2300 Connecticut Ave, NW
Washington, D.C. 20008

Dear Ambassador Jiechi:

I am writing on behalf of my constituent, Ms. Jian Yang, who has contacted my office with urgent concerns about the welfare of her brother, Dr. Jianli Yang. Dr. Yang was apparently detained on April 26, 2002 in Kunming, China. Ms. Yang is understandably concerned about her brother’s condition and would like to know where he is being held and his current health.

I have been informed by my constituent that Dr. yang may have violated Chinese immigration laws as he reportedly traveled on false or incomplete documents. However, his health and special circumstances are of concern to me. Dr. Yang is a U.S. lawful permanent resident, who lives with his wife and child in Brookline, Massachusetts. He is a prominent advocate for democracy and human rights in China and has testified numerous times Capitol Hill.

I appreciate your kind review of this matter. Your government’s action in releasing Dr. Yang would signal to the United States and the world its commitment to improving human rights conditions.

Sincerely,

Constance A. Morella
Member of Congress
