A letter of Senator Zbigniew Romaszewski to Chinese Embassy in PolandZbigniew Romaszewski Warsaw, 09.09.2002
The Honorable Zhou Xiaopei
Dear Ambassador, I am deeply concerned about recent arrest of an internationally renowned human rights activist – Dr. Yang Jianli of Boston in People’s Republic of China. My concern deepens with every day, as four and a half months had passed and no official charges had been brought against him. His family is also refused any information regarding his status. Another person who recently disappeared without a trace is Mr. Zhao Changqing, who organized the signature campaign for the release of Dr. Yang Jianli. The catastrophic June 4th 1989 had strongly impaired Chinese international prestige. The decision to organize 2008 Olympic Game in Beijing was one of the signs of its recent recuperation. It is my opinion that repressing famous and meritorious human rights activists, devoted to ideals of non-violence and brotherhood of nations, will not strengthen Chinese international position. Let me again emphasize my deep concern about the arrest of Dr. Yang Jianli and kindly urge you to brief me on the official standpoint on his case. I would also like to be informed about any further developments regarding Dr. Yang Jianli. Respectfully yours, Zbigniew Romaszewski Senator, Republic of Poland -------------------------- |
