President George W. Bush The White House Washington, DC 20500

Dear President Bush,

I have recently learned of the situation regarding Dr. Yang Jianli, a legal U.S. permanent resident who has been detained in China since April 26, 2002, while he was on a trip to research labor protests in his native county. Dr. Yang, together with his wife, Christina Fu, and their two young children are members of All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Brookline, Massachusetts, a community in which they have been active and well-respected.

Dr. Yang’s family has been informed that no formal charges have been brought against him, yet they have been denied any contact with or information about him. His family and other members of All Saints’ Parish are greatly concerned for his well-being and safety.

I understand that officials in the United States Department of State have been working publicly and behind the scenes for Dr. Yang’s release. I pray that you will also consider this case a priority and will personally encourage the Chinese government to respond quickly and positively to this situation.

Many national and international contacts have been made upon Dr. Yang’s behalf, asking for information which would lead to his safe return to Massachusetts. As Episcopal Bishop of this Diocese, I add my voice to others in requesting that all possible means be made available to hasten the release of Dr. Yang and his return to his family.

Thank you for your time and concern in this most important matter.

Faithfully yours,

M. Thomas Shaw, SSJE
