Please Ask Your Representatives in Congress to Sign a New Letter

Support Group

Aug 4, 2004

Dear Friends,

Representatives Barney Frank and Christopher Cox have co-authored a new letter to Chinese President Hu Jintao on behalf of Dr. Yang Jianli who has been imprisoned in China for over two years. It urges the release of Dr. Yang when he becomes eligible for parole in October. This follows an announcement made in May that he would be sentenced to five years in prison for espionage for Taiwan and illegal border crossing. His sentence, which includes time already served in detention, provides for the possibility of parole halfway through his prison term - a term that began back in April, 2002.

Currently, both the Congressmen need the support of their colleagues in the House and are urging them also to sign the letter. You will note that the names of the Representatives who have already signed on with their support are listed at the bottom of the letter. We encourage you to forward all of this information to your friends/relatives - especially those whose Reps/Congressional Districts do not yet appear on the list. Yang Jianli's wife, Christina Fu, is asking that we devote our energies during the month of August to publicize this initiative so that it will assume a reasonable amount of priority when Congress reconvenes. If you would like a copy of this material forwarded to you via email, please contact Susan Cleaver at 617-734-1889 or scleaver @ bu.edu. Further information is available at www.yangjianli.com.

Thank you,
