PROMINENT Chinese dissident Yang Jianli, a US resident, was sentenced today to five years in prison by a Beijing court after being convicted of espionage and illegal entry, Xinhua news agency said.

Since his arrest in April 2002, Yang has been one of the most prominent dissidents in Chinese police custody with US Vice President Dick Cheney specifically raising his case during his visit to China last month.

Xinhua said the Harvard University research fellow had been convicted of spying for Taiwan, but did not offer any details
