HE LOST SPRING

Shelley Fines

. . It can't be springtime
. . . Wasn't it yesterday
Springtime meant the roses
In the kingdom far away.

Along the boulevard
The petals fell like rain
Crushed into their mother earth
They'll never bloom again.

The children reached for sunshine
Tried to drive the clouds away
But springtime painted innocence
In blood and shades of grey.

Forgive my sadness when you tell me
That it's spring again
But springtime took the children
And turned magic into rain.

With springtime should come happiness
But that will never be
'Cause a mother's tears
And a dragon's smile
Are springtime now for me.
